Snow Job: "Irving Berlin's White Christmas" Set for Broadway Holiday Run
Call it an early Christmas as producers have announced that Irving Berlin's White Christmas, a stage version of the classic movie musical, will play on Broadway this holiday season. A billboard went up recently in Times Square on the marquis at the Marquis Theatre. That theater is scheduled to host a new musical based on the movie 9 to 5 in the spring, and with previous tenant Cry Baby closing after the Tony Awards, why not put a Christmas show on the boards? After all, How the Grinch Stole Christmas played limited Broadway runs each of the past two holiday seasons.
Irving Berlin's White Christmas has been making the rounds nationally since its 2004 premier in San Francisco. Just like the movie, it centers on the story of a couple of World War II veterans turned showbiz hoofers, who end up putting on a show to save a Vermont ski resort and find the loves of their lives in the process. The stage version features Irving Berlin songs from the movie and more.
But will there be snow? Well, there has been in all the regional venues as the white stuff falls on audiences in the finale. The show opens November 23, with previews beginning November 14. It closes January 4. You can buy tickets now and the cast CD, which features performers from the regional shows.
Regional productions also will play Detroit and St. Paul, Minn., this holiday season.
