'In the Heights' Takes Soundtrack Grammy
The accolades keep on coming for In the Heights and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music and lyrics and conceived the show. Not only did it take the Tony for Best Musical, it beat out stiff competition to take the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
In the Heights was up against the revivals of Gypsy and South Pacific and movies-turned-musicals The Little Mermaid and Young Frankenstein
When you think about it, that means Miranda beat out Broadway royalty past and present, including: Rogers and Hammerstein; Sondheim and Styne; Menken and Ashman; and Mel Brooks, whose The Producers won more Tony Awards than any show in history. You can learn more about each of nominated soundtracks on this site.
Not bad for a public school kid from Manhattan's Inwood neighorhood.
