Broadway Grosses Take a Turn for the Better
Despite some really nasty weather in New York City, Broadway grosses bounced back some in the most recent tally from The Broadway League, the trade group for theater owners and producers.
Particularly encouraging was Shrek the Musical’s improved numbers. The big green guy filled just 56 percent of seats in the Broadway Theatre according to the previous report, but last week capacity improved to 74 percent, and ticket grosses jumped 21 percent.
The show’s producers, DreamWorks Theatricals, had said Shrek was doing great on the weekends but was soft on weekdays and that it would show up in the numbers. And in fact, they added a Sunday night show to its schedule, dropping the Wednesday night show. Traditionally, Broadway shows get their eight performances by being dark Sunday and Monday nights and having matinees Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. But there’s no hard and fast rule. Rent, always the tradition-buster, had a Monday night show during its Broadway run.
Other shows showing strong improvement included Avenue Q, In the Heights, and Mamma Mia!. The complete list of shows is available at Live Broadway!
