Though gone, Oscar Hammerstein II and the work he left behind are not forgotten. Born July 12, 1895, he wrote the lyrics to songs that became the bedrock of what we now call "musical theatre."
A few of the shows he worked on include the landmark first book musical, Show Boat, plus South Pacific, Oklahoma!, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. He was called "the man who owned Broadway" -- an appropriate moniker, to be sure.
