Move over "Glee," there's a new wannabe Broadway hit on the small tube!
Steven Spielberg's tale of the trials and tribulations of mounting a Broadway musical, "Smash," has been picked up by NBC for next season. The pilot starred Tony nominee Christian Borle and TV darling Debra Messing, along with other music faves previously announced. The pilot's music was penned by Catch Me If You Can's team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman and was directed by American Idiot's Michael Mayer.
Who will stay on for the actual series? Will more legit Broadway-esque tunes find their way onto the show? Only time will tell if "Smash" really is "Glee for Grownups" ... as long as they keep talented, real Broadway pros on screen and behind the scenes, Spielberg's musical outing should be a true "smash" indeed.
