If you love the American songbook repertoire so expertly crafted by composers of the early 20th century, Kathleen Marshall's new Broadway musical offering, Nice Work If You Can Get It, should put a smile on your face and a song in your heart.
Tony-winning choreographer Marshall has assembled a top-rate team both on stage and off. Nice Work if You Can Get It stars Tony winner Matthew Broderick (How to Succeed...) and Tony nominee Kelli O'Hara (South Pacific), as well as Academy Award winner Estelle Parsons and Tony Award winner Judy Kaye. With a storyline based on bootleggers and playboys, Nice Work evokes the bygone era when the Gershwins penned some of their best tunes.
The only downside to Nice Work may be its revue stylings of Gershwin standards that might not be a turn-on for younger theatre-goers. But audiences of all ages have flocked to see Marhsall's Tony-winning revival of Cole Porter's classic musical comedy Anything Goes. With a creative team comprised of Tony Award winners, Nice Work just might be able to overcome its "rehashed revue" origins and pick up a Tony Award nomination or two.
