Drama Desk Awards

Because theatre pros are hard-working people, when one member or group is not recognized, the (stage) troupes rally to protest. This is exactly what has transpired in the 48 hours since the Drama Desk Award nominations were announced on Friday, April 27, 2012.
The press release went out Friday, and no one thought much about it, except for the category for Orchestrations was nowhere in the press release. Then a second press release was issued explaining it was not an omission of the category, but an elimination of the Orchestration category!
Musical lovers across the Twitterverse burned up the bandwidth in protest. The Orchestration of a musical is as crucial to a show as the sets, costumes, and actors themselves. After all, the orchestration is the script, structure, set dressing, and accessories of the composer's music. The artform is called MUSIC-al theatre for a reason.
