53rd Annual Drama Desk Awards

The Drama Desk Awards honor excellence in theater for Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway during the season. They are the only awards in which all three tiers (Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway) actually compete against each other. Other awards either distinguish between the tiers or do not include Off-Off Broadway productions. The Drama Desk was founded in 1949, bringing critic and writers together to support the development of New York theater. Nominations for the 53rd Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced on the morning of Monday, April 28, 2008 at the New York Friars Club by Bebe Neuwirth and Len Cariou. This year the Nominating Committee recognized the creative use of digital technology and its integral part of theater artistry and added a new category for Outstanding Projection and Video Design.

The 53rd Annual Drama Desk Awards was held Sunday, May 18, 2008, in the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center. The awards show was be webcast for the sixth year in a row by TheaterMania.com. It was also broadcast live on satellite radio’s XM – 28 On Broadway for the second consecutive year.
