The new Broadway musical Chaplin explores the life and work of entertainment legend, who thrilled audiences with his humor and his self-deprecating humanity, Charlie Chaplin. A labor of love for the creative team and the large ensemble cast, this new production is set to premiere on Broadway in September 2012 at the Barrymore Theatre, located at 243 West 47th Street.
Chaplin highlights early 20th century Hollywood showbiz but in a Broadway musical format. Charlie Chaplin was born in the slums of London and overcame adversity to cross the Atlantic on his journey to becoming celluloid royalty in the days of silent film. This brand new musical with its Tony Award-winning creative and design teams features a 24-person triple-threat cast to reveal the genius man behind the enduring legend that made audiences fall in love with cinema.
Previews for the Broadway premiere of Chaplin will begin on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, and the official Opening Night is set for Monday, September 10, 2012.
Centered around film icon Charlie Chaplin, who was known as the "Little Tramp," this new musical based on his life features music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis. The Book was written by Curtis along with three-time Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan, who won Broadway's highest honor for his work on Tony-winning productions of Annie, The Producers, the new Mel Brooks musical (with Mel Brooks), and Hairspray (with Mark O'Donnell).
Chaplin stars Rob McClure in the triple-threat title role that he originated at la Jolla Playhouse. The production also features Jim Borstelmann as "Alf Reeves," Jenn Colella as "Hedda Hopper," Erin Mackey as "Oona O’Neill," Michael McCormick as "Sennett, McGranery" and as the "Emcee," Christiane Noll as "Hannah Chaplin," Zachary Unger as "Young Charlie" and also as "Jackie," with Wayne Alan Wilcox as "Sydney Chaplin."
The cast is rounded out with a large ensemble that includes Justin Bowen, Emilee Dupré, Sara Edwards, Leslie Donna Flesner, Lisa Gajda, Timothy Hughes, Ethan Khusidman, Ian Liberto, Renée Marino, Michael Mendez, Sarah O’Gleby, Hayley Podschun, Adam Rogers, William Ryall, Eric Santagata, and Emily Tyra.
Acclaimed director/choreographer Warren Carlyle directs and choreographs this new production for the Great White Way. Carlyle also worked on Finian’s Rainbow and Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway.
The rest of the creative team for Chaplin includes Scenic Designer Beowulf Boritt who was nominated for a 2011 Tony Award for The Scottsboro Boys. Leading the period Costume Design is Amy Clark along with Martin Pakledinaz, who won Tony Awards for Best Costume Design for Kiss Me Kate and Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Lighting Design is by Ken Billington, who won a Tony Award for Best Lighting Design for the 1997 Broadway revival of Bob Fossee's and Kander and Ebb's Chicago. Sound Design is by Tony Award winner Scott Lehrer along with Drew Levy, and the Projection Design by Jon Driscoll who was nominated for 2012 Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards for his work on Ghost the Musical. Bryan Perri is set to be the Musical Director.
Chaplin is produced on Broadway by the Rich Entertainment Group, Roy Gabay who produced Fela!, The Little Dog Laughed, Steel Magnolias, and John and Claire Caudwell. John Caudwell is a well known British entrepreneur, philanthropist and champion of charitable causes. Additional producers will be announced at a later date.
