Get out the leg warmers and welding helmets, Flashdance the Musical is coming to a town near you and eventually to New York for a Broadway premiere. The movie that became a 1980's pop culture phenomenon has been adapted for the stage and will jeté across the United States in preparation for its Broadway launch.
Flashdance the Musical tells the story of Alex Owens, a young blue collar worker in Pittsburgh, who dreams of being a dancer. She works as a welder at a steel factory mill during the day and pours liquor for drunks at a bar at night, keeping her dancing goals a secret. She begins a relationship with the steel mill boss, which threatens her pursuit of a dance career.
The first national tour of Flashdance the Musical will begin New Year's Day, appropriately in Pittsburgh, at Heinz Hall. The production will then travel to over 25 cities around the U.S. with additional cities to be announced later on. A second performing company of Flashdance the Musical will be assembled for the Broadway premiere of the show, which is set to begin performances in August 2013 as an open-ended run.
Starring in this national tour production are Emily Padgett as "Alex," Matthew Hydzik as "Nick," and Rachelle Rak as "Tess." Joining them on stage are Kelly Felthous as "Gloria," DeQuina Moore as "Kiki," Jo Ann Cunningham as "Hannah," David R. Gordon as "Jimmy," Matthew Henerson as "Harry," and Christian Whelan as "C.C."
Rounding out the triple threat ensemble cast are Holly Ann Butler, Claire Camp, Derek Carley, Ryan Carlson, Natalie Caruncho, Lynorris Evans, Thursday Farrar, Charlene Hoffman, Holly Laurent, Jakob Karr, Dan Kohler, Brandt Martinez, Nicholas McGough, Ariela Morgenstern, Rebecca Riker, Andrea Spiridonakos, and Lawrence Street.
The stage version has retained the hit Top Ten songs from the movie and award-winning soundtrack including "Flashdance," "Maniac," "Gloria," "Manhunt," and "I Love Rock & Roll." Along with these iconic '80's tunes, the creative team wrote 16 new songs to tell the story of a humble girl with big dreams.Flashdance the Musical is directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo who worked on best Musical Tony winners Jersey Boys and Memphis as well as The Addams Family and Leap of Faith. The musical features a Book by Robert Cary and Tom Hedley, who was the co-writer of the original screenplay of the film version of Flashdance with Joe Eszterhas. Music is by Robbie Roth with Lyrics by Robert Cary and Robbie Roth.
The design team includes Scenic Design by Klara Zieglerova, Costume Design by Paul Tazewell, Lighting Design by Howell Binkley, with Projection Design by Peter Nigrini, Sound Design by John Shivers and David Patridge, Hair & Wig Design are by Charles LaPointe, and Make-up Design is by Cookie Jordan
The production also features Music Supervision and Vocal and Incidental Music Arrangements by Jason Howland, with full Orchestrations by Doug Besterman. Dance Music arrangements are by Jim Abbott.
This tour celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the original Paramount Pictures movie that caught the heart of moviegoers everywhere and eventually grossed over $150 million. The 1983 film won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the title tune "Flashdance," but sparked controversy because Jennifer Beals did none of the dancing in the film.
This first national tour of Flashdance launches on January 1, 2013, and officially opens January 3, in Pittsburgh, PA, the setting of the show itself. January tour locations include St. Louis, MO, Louisville, KY, Grand Rapids, MI, and Wilmington, DE. In February 2013, Flashdance will hit the roadhouses in Atlanta, GA, Baltimore, MD, Tampa, FL, and New Orleans, LA. In March, the tour will be in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Nashville, TN. For April, the show will be in Minneapolis, MN, Spokane, WA, Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, and Tempe, AZ. May finds the tour in Costa Mesa, CA, with June dates in Houston, TX, San Antonio, TX, and finishing up in Dallas, TX.
