Based on the true story of a contest in Texas that required competitors to keep their hand on a truck in order to win it, Hands on a Hardbody is a new American musical by an award-winning team in the creative and design departments. Hands on a Hardbody is sure to be one of the most unique musicals to hit the boards in the 2012-2013 season.
Originally performed in 2012 at La Jolla Playhouse in Pasadena, CA, the musical Hands on a Hardbody makes the transfer to the Broadway stage for 2013 and will play at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre located at 256 West 47th Street. Preview performances are set to begin on February 23, 2013, with the official Opening Night slated to be held on March 21, 2013, just in time for Tony Award consideration.
Inspired by these true events, Hands on a Hardbody explores the extent to which ten down-on-their-luck Texans will go to pursue the American dream as they participate in a crazy contest to win a truck. Through humor and determination, these plucky idealists battle the elements and their surroundings to keep at least one hand on a brand new truck in the hopes of winning it and changing their fortune.
This new American musical features a book by Doug Wright, who won the Pulitzer Prize for I Am My Own Wife, with lyrics by Amanda Green, who also wrote Bring It On: The Musical, and music by Green and Trey Anastasio of Phish. The show is directed by Neil Pepe who also helmed the Broadway production of David Mamet's Speed-The-Plow starring Madonna. Musical Staging for this production is by Sergio Trujillo, Tony-nominated choreographer of Memphis, Jersey Boys, and Leap of Faith, as well as the upcoming Broadway show, Flashdance the Musical.
The Broadway premiere of Hands on a Hard Body features the full cast from the La Jolla Playhouse production including Keith Carradine, who was nominated for a Tony Award for his work in Tommy Tune's The Will Rogers Follies. Also featured in the cast are Allison Case of Hair and Hunter Foster who was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in Little Shop of Horrors. The cast is rounded out by Jay Armstrong Johnson from the Tony Award-winning Catch Me If You Can, David Larsen of American Idiot, Jacob Ming-Trent of Shrek The Musical, Kathleen Elizabeth Monteleone from Tales of the City, Mary Gordon Murray of Into The Woods, Jim Newman was was seen in the Tony-winning Curtains, Connie Ray from Next Fall, Jon Rua of the Tony Award-winning In The Heights, Keala Settle of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Dale Soules also of Hair, Scott Wakefield of Ring of Fire, and William Youmans seen in Wicked.
Hands on a Hard Body is supported by an award-winning design team including Tony Award-winning Scenic Design by Christine Jones who worked on American Idiot, Tony-winning Costumer Susan Hilferty who designed Wicked, Tony Award-winning Lighting Designer Kevin Adams who lit Spring Awakening, and Tony Award-winning Sound Designer Steve Canyon Kennedy who worked on Jersey Boys. Orchestrations are by Trey Anastasio, and the Vocal Arrangements/Music Direction by Carmel Dean who also worked on American Idiot.
This new musical by is based on the 1997 documentary that covered the story. The documentary was created by S.R. Bindler and produced by Bindler and Kevin Morris. The world premiere production of Hands on a Hardbody at La Jolla Playhouse opened on May 12, 2012 and ran for a limited time through June 17, 2012.
