About This Show:
33 Variations, with Jane Fonda returning to Broadway, tells a story with words and music of genius and obsession.
As failing hearing and finances plague composer Ludvig Van Beethoven, he begins obsessively writing 33 variations on a nondescript waltz by a second-rate composer.
Simultaneously on stage, yet almost 200 years later, as she faces the prospect of physical deterioration from a terminal illness, Beethoven scholar Katherine Brandt avoids emotional entanglement with her daughter by obsessing on Beethovens obsession.
To the background of Beethovens music, these characters form a variation of their own.
Whos Who and Whats What:
33 Variations marks the return of Academy Award-winner Fonda (as Katherine) to Broadway for the first time since 1963. The play also stars Colin Hanks, Samantha Mathis, and Zack Greiner, as Beethoven.
33 Variations was written and is being directed by Moises Kaufman, who was Tony-nominated for directing I Am My Own Wife.
