What '9 to 5' Is About:
9 to 5 the Musical brings the hit movie of the same name to the stage with a comic look at bad bosses and shattered glass ceilings. With a score by Dolly Parton - her first Broadway musical - 9 to 5 brings a light-hearted touch to the Great White Way.
Tired of being abused by their credit-stealing, sexist boss, three women kidnap him, and things get better at work, including the bottom-line results. But can they keep him under wraps until credit comes their way?
Who's Who and What's What:
The movie’s popularity was cemented in our cultural memory by the hit Dolly Parton title song, which also is used in the musical. Patricia Resnick wrote the book for Parton’s music and lyrics. Joe Mantello is the director.
Parton, who had a break-out performance in the movie, played a sexy but wholesome secretary, portrayed on stage by Megan Hilty. Allison Janney has the role of Violet Newstead played by Lily Tomlin in the film. And Stephanie J. Block plays Judy Bernly, whom Jane Fonda played on screen.
