'Avenue Q' - Puppets Gone Wild on Broadway

From , former About.com Guide

101 Words About This Show:

Think of Avenue Q as all the Sesame Street characters who got sent to detention putting on a Broadway musical. You’ve got your insensitive racial stereotyping. You’ve got your puppet promiscuity. You’ve got your political incorrectness. Boy! Do you have political incorrectness.

In short, you’ve got at an outrageously irreverent and completely funny show.

Avenue Q is a mostly about finding and giving acceptance, and follows the misadventures of Princeton, a newcomer to a neighborhood that includes a sexually confused Republican, a couple of monsters, and Gary Coleman. (Yes, that Gary Coleman.)

Who’s Who and What’s What:

Avenue Q features music and lyrics by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez, with book by Jeff Whitty. It premiered off-Broadway at The Vineyard in 2003 and quickly transferred to Broadway’s Golden Theatre.

The show was the surprise big winner for the 1994 Tonys taking the award for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score.

It was another find for producer Kevin McCollum, who among other shows, brought Rent and In the Heights to Broadway.
