About This Show:
Guys and Dolls, the classic ‘Musical Fable of Broadway’ took the loveable thugs from Damon Runyan short stories and gave them booming musical voices and dancing feet.
Guys and Dolls took Broadway by storm in 1950, sweeping top Tony Awards with its sparkling music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and street-wise book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.
This revival sets the show in the 1930s and focuses on gambler Skye Masterson’s bet that he can woo and win saintly Sarah Brown, who runs the local Save-a-Soul Mission. It gave us songs such as “Luck Be a Lady” and, of course, “Guys and Dolls.”
Who’s Who and What’s What:
Guys and Dolls has always been a career booster. For instance, the 1990s revival starred Peter Gallagher, Nathan Lane, and Faith Prince, with supporting roles going to Tony-winning director Walter Bobbie, TV and movie star J.K. Simmons, and Tony-winner Victoria Clark.
Craig Bierko, who was Tony-nominated for a revival of The Music Man, is back on Broadway as Skye, and Tony-nominee Oliver Platt is Nathan Detroit. Nathan’s long-suffering girl friend, Adelaide, is played by Gilmore Girl Lauren Graham, and Miss Sarah Brown is Kate Jennings Grant.
Tony-winner Des McAnuff is directing.
