101 Words About This Show:
Mamma Mia!, which features the hit music of mega-group ABBA, opened in 2001 and has rocked Broadways Winter Garden Theatre since.
Mamma Mia! tells the story of bride-to-be Sophie and her mother, Donna, who live on a Greek island. Sophie wants her father at the wedding; trouble is he could be one of three men romantically involved with Donna in her younger, wilder days. So, Sophie invites all three to the island and hi-jinx ensue.
Got that? Doesnt matter. People attend Mamma Mia! for the music, which routinely has them dancing in the aisles by the finale.
Whos Who and Whats What:
Mamma Mia! was the bright idea of Judy Craymer, who convinced ABBAs Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson to let her give the concept a try. British playwright Catherine Johnson wrote the Tony-nominated book, and the show opened in London in 1999.
It has been an international phenomenon with standing productions around the world and international tours.
Additionally, it is one of the few Broadway shows to have been conceived, written and directed by women. Phyllida Lloyd directed both the London and New York productions.
