Many call Gypsy one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time, and certainly among the true gems of backstage shows.
This self-described musical fable tells the story of uber-stage-mother Momma Roses drive to see her daughter succeed. Of course, exactly what Rose is willing to trade for that success and exactly whose success it really is makes this show magic.
The songs by Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne are magic themselves and include "Let Me Entertain You;" "Together, Wherever We Go;" "If Momma Was Married;" and "Everythings Coming Up Roses."
This production is the fourth revival of the 1960 original.
Gypsy stars Patti LuPone in a Tony-winning performance as Momma Rose, her award coming 28 years after she won it for Evita. Laura Benanti and Boyd Gaines also won Tonys for Featured Actress and Supporting Actor.
A bit of ironic Broadway trivia, the original production won the Best Musical Award in 1960, but the original Momma Rose, Ethel Merman, lost the Best Actress Tony to Mary Martin in the The Sound of Music.
