Brunch the Musical

Peter James Zielenkski

Brunch is a new musical showing a Sunday in the life of New York’s harried, hopeful waiters.

What This Show Is About

You know what they say about never wanting to see what goes on in a restaurant kitchen? The same might be true for the behind-the-scenes life of the wait staff. Brunch, a new musical, traces a Sunday morning and afternoon from the eyes of the put-upon wait staff of a trendy Upper East Side restaurant. You don’t want to know what they think about you, if you’re a customer. But you’ll enjoy learning a bit about them.

None of them really want to be there, and all of them would really like to have someplace better to be. But as Brunch opens, they don’t.

Brunch centers around the restaurant’s bartender, Jake. He’s the nicest of the group, he’s been there the longest, and, secretly, he wants out the worst. But something won’t quite let Jake take the plunge.

Enter April, a trainee, who brings a fresh perspective to the compromises each of the managers and servers has made. Under the gaze of new observer, Jake can no longer dodge the question of whether he’ll stay and take all the garbage that goes along with his job, or get out.

What You’ll Like About ‘Brunch’

Kevin T. Collins gives a solid performance as Jake. You’ll like his “calm amid the storm” right up until he becomes the storm.

Brunch is a big-cast production, 16 in all with 15 on stage at a time. You’ll like the energy, the constant movement, the feel of the hustle of a Sunday-morning brunch run. And you’ll really enjoy musical director Martin Landry’s double duty as “Chef,” a German transplant who “vants to be a vaiter.”

Who’s Who and What’s What

Brunch features a book by Rick Kunzi and Adam Barnosky with music and lyrics by Kunzi, who also directed. This pair also produced the show.

Sabrina Jacob is the choreographer, and for a small production she gives great energy and definition to the show, particularly in the first act.
