Tony Awards for Best Scenic Designer

From 1947 to the Present

By , About.com Guide

The Tony Awards began in 1947 to honor the best in professional theatrical productions on Broadway in New York City.

The Scenic Designer is responsible for all set pieces of a production, both stationary and moving. Sometimes, the term "Set Designer" is used.

The Tony Award for Best Scenic Design has been awarded since the Tonys began in 1947, with the exception of 1949. In 1960, the category was split to differentiate between the set designs of Plays and those of Musicals, but this only lasted two years. Since 2005, the award has been awarded to the Best Scenic Designer of a Play and the Best Scenic Designer of a Musical.
